January 2016 Events in State College, PA: Welcome New Beginnings

Happy New Year! January is the time when we all welcome new beginnings and set resolutions to make this year better than the last. But how does one keep those resolutions throughout the year ahead? The New York Times offers four suggestions: First, make a concrete plan, something visual to embed it to memory. Second, put something you value on the line – is it your health or your pocketbook – keep that in mind when you are tempted to break your resolution. Third, bundle your temptations. For instance, you want to exercise more, but struggle getting to the gym and you also have a fondness for gossip magazines but feel they are a waste of time. Combine the two – read the magazines only at the gym! And fourth, seek social support. You can achieve more by pursuing goals with the help of a mentor.

Still haven’t made any resolutions? Resolve to join us every month for a wide variety of events and activities. This month we explore our creativity through music with outings to local musical performances, Elvis’ birthday celebrations and concerts by our Joyful Noise Choir. We invite you to Welcome New Beginnings and make regular visits to Juniper Village part of your new year’s goals!

Our fabulous January 2016 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care include our:

§  Dinner and Discussion with PA Centre Orchestra to meet Board Vice President, Karen Blair Brand and members of the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra for an evening of euphonious education as they explore the history of orchestral music and the Centre Orchestra with a dinner performance to accompany a delightful dinner of chicken scaloppini, red-skinned mashed potatoes, and green beans on January 13th at 6:00 pm. (Reservations required at 814-235-2041.)

§  Happy Hour with Tommy Wareham to enjoy snacks, including a charcuterie tray, fine cheeses and artisan crackers, drinks, and music with your loved ones as Tommy Wareham sings your favorite songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, so warm up those vocal chords and sing along with this local legend on January 21st at 3:30 pm. The Giving Season

The elves at Juniper Village at Brookline have been extra busy this month! After we wrapped up our November food drive, which collected more than 400 pounds of food for the State College Area Food Bank, collection for Toys for Tots was in full swing! Earlier this week we were able to send a car full of surprises for some very deserving State College-area children.

Additionally, associates--and the jolliest of all the elves, Santa himself--manned the corner of College Avenue and S. Allen Street on behalf of the Salvation Army. Bells were ringing and a choir was singing (just across the street), as the Red Kettle quickly filled to the brim. Nurturing the spirit of life in our residents and associates is a big part of what we do every day here at Juniper Village, and nurturing that same spirit in our greater community is equally as important. Wishing you all a very happy holiday season, from our family to yours.

"Making the Rounds"

In 1946, recent graduates of Penn State, Donald Bany and his sweetheart Doris became husband and wife, and quickly settled into life in the Happy Valley. Buying a parcel of land in cash from the Meyer (Meyer Dairy) and Boal (Boalsburg) families, the newlyweds built the home where they would reside for all of their 62 years of matrimony.

As Chief Financial Officer at the Graduate School at Penn State, and a 6th grade teacher at State College's Fairmount Avenue Elementary, Don and Doris fell in love with the area more each day, becoming staunch supporters of the local farming community and area businesses. One of their favorite establishments was, of course, Meyer Dairy, where they would frequently treat themselves to ice cream. The couple's niece and nephew, who lived with them, were also the recipients of their generosity. "They helped to raise us, and built us our own rooms in the house," shared niece, Mary Lee Meter. "They taught my brother [Chris Snyder] and I many valuable life lessons, including the adage that it is better to give than to receive."

When Doris fell ill and moved to Brookline a few years ago, Don faithfully visited his "ideal wife" every day during that last year of her life. Now a resident himself, Don participates in physical therapy through RehabCare, provided on-site at the community. It took some time before he warmed up to the idea of therapy, until one day he arrived in the first-floor therapy room and his eyes lit up. On the far wall of the room, he spotted a painting of The Corner Room, a local restaurant and downtown landmark where he and Doris regularly dined. The portrait instantly brought back fond memories and created in Don that extra "push" to move forward with his treatment.

Recently, while cleaning out the family home, Mary Lee came across a print of "Making the Rounds," portraying an old Meyer Dairy milk wagon. Together, with a description of the painting photos of the couple, and a note of thanks, she donated the pictured works to the therapy department. "Making the Rounds is given to the Physical Therapy Department who got Don up and walking to 'make the rounds'."

Meter says she hopes the gift will continue to inspire not only her uncle, but might also do the same for others. And just in case Don needs a little extra motivation some days, she delivers to him a daily bowl of chocolate and vanilla deliciousness from the one-and-only Meyer Dairy.

December 2015 Events in State College, PA: Celebrate Little Things

This month is all about celebrations! Not only will we be celebrating holidays such as Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve, but we will also celebrate the little things that make life worthwhile. Little things such as the reassuring touch of a friend’s hand, a kind word from an acquaintance and a warm smile from a stranger.

In our all too busy lives we sometimes forget to honor the simple things in life that bring us peace and joy. Most experts recommend that we allow 10-20 minutes of relaxation and stress relief each day. Making time for that can even be a stressful experience! During this busy month of baking, shopping, visitors and juggling tasks take time to remember what is really important.

Here are some tips to keep holiday stress in check: Acknowledge your feelings – you are not alone as holiday stress is not uncommon. Be realistic with expectations – you can only do so much, learn to say no. Ask for help when needed – everyone wants to be needed and may feel more included by being able to contribute. Plan ahead to minimize unplanned expenses and tasks. Take a breather – take a walk at night and do some stargazing, listen to soothing music, or get a massage. Above all enjoy all the holidays have to offer by sharing time with others.

Join us during the busy month of December for our annual cookie exchange and holiday celebrations. Take time to Celebrate Little Things with those you love.

Our fabulous December 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care include our:

§  Holiday Decorate Your Own Cookies Referral Event as we spread some holiday cheer and adorn these holiday treats while we leave the stress of the season behind and enjoy an evening of professional networking and delicious fun on December 9th at 6:00 pm.

§  Victorian Holiday Feast as our family members are invited to enjoy a Victorian themed holiday meal with their loved ones to delight in the traditional tastes and treats of this exquisite meal, served to you restaurant style by our Juniper associates on December 10th at 6:00 pm. (RSVP to 814-238-3139.)

§  Nittany Knights Holiday Cocktail Concert in the holiday spirit for refreshments and beautiful seasonal tunes by the Nittany Knights Barbershop Chorus at this free concert that will delight young and old on December 14th at 7:00 pm.

We look forward to sharing our December 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care with you as we Celebrate Little Things.

Resident Veterans Honored

Juniper Village at Brookline veterans were honored during an hour-long presentation Wednesday. Most of our nearly 50 veterans were able to make the event, hosted in the Willows Dining Room. Special guest speaker, Marine Sergeant Everett Craig, a Vietnam Veteran, spoke on the importance of the bonds created during war and why it is so important for him to remember those soldiers who did not have the opportunity to return home.

Brookline favorite, Picker & Papa, provided musical entertainment, as residents, families, and community members shouted classic requests like God Bless America and You're a Grand Ole' Flag.
The nearly 90 guests snacked on pastries and mingled before calling it an afternoon.

Thank you to all who came out to support our service men and women, and thank you to those who have served!

November 2015 Events in State College, PA: Cherish The Journey

Family is a simple word, with complex meaning. To some family is the people you are related to by blood, but to some family is the people you choose to hold in high regard, and to others family isn’t people at all, but animals – our beloved pets.

Regardless of the definition, family plays an important role in our personal journey. As the saying goes, “Family is what you make it.” Whether made of blood relatives, friends, colleagues or pets, your family can offer you the support you need to thrive.

This month we celebrate family and reflect on our personal journeys while creating new memories for the future. Join us as we reminisce about these journeys through autobiographical journaling. Plan to share with those less fortunate through our annual food drive from November 1-30 with all non-perishable food items being donated to a local food bank. Also interact and share with others through our community support groups, and know that you are not alone. Throughout the month we will also be hosting several family events as we celebrate family and give thanks. Walk this way...

Introduced years ago as a periodic leisure activity, Brookline's “Walking Club” has recently expanded to include Juniper’s “Don’t Sit, Get Fit Route 66” model of tracking steps, while also incorporating a very important restorative aspect.

As part of our Restorative Nursing and therapies programs, the Walking Club has taken on new life under the direction of Connections Director, Larry Glace. Brookline’s Connections department, along with Restorative Nursing and RehabCare Therapy in-house services, work together to keep an updated list of all residents who are both capable of and would benefit from an ambulation program with individualized  goals.

The group, which meets twice a week, features one-on-one customized programs for those residents whose insurance plans have dropped coverage for certain exercise therapies, but who could still greatly benefit from additional physical exercise. Individuals’ distances can now be tracked and recorded to give the team a baseline, as well as something to work towards; collaborating for overall improvement, minimizing decline, increasing bone density, and reducing the risk of falls.

“It’s just one of the many ways that we are able to walk our talk when it comes to nurturing the spirit of life in all of its seasons,” says Glace, adding, “I’m proud to play a part in helping to keep our residents as mobile and independent as possible.”

Homecoming Hoopla!

WE ARE Juniper Village and WE ARE Penn State! Welcome to State College, Pennsylvania, where the Happy Valley is never happier than during PSU Homecoming Weekend! This year at Juniper Village we kicked off the festivities with a spirited tailgate celebration at our Wellspring Community. There were hot dogs, root beer floats, and those famous Grilled Stickies topped with Penn State Creamery ice cream, along with a fun photo booth for the kids and lots of community cheer!

Friday afternoon, residents and associates from across the Brookline campus loaded the "frog bus" and took to the Homecoming Parade route to show our Juniper and PSU pride! While cheering and handing out candy along the way was definitely a highlight, it was the visit and support of the Nittany Lion himself that took the show! Who is that handsome fellow with the frog bag?!

Restorative Nursing Program with Patty Specht

Restorative Nursing Coordinator, Patty Specht and Brookline resident, Betty Ammerman

LPN and Restorative Nursing Coordinator Patty Specht chose to be a nurse because, like many in the field, she wanted to do something to help others live a better life with hopes of making a difference to them and their loved ones--even if in a small way. Today--with 15 years of service at Brookline--Patty helps to make a big difference, especially when it comes to our Restorative Nursing Program (RNP).

Working together to return--or maintain--residents to their highest level of ambulatory function and overall wellbeing, a team of one LPN and two CNAs work in conjunction with our Connections department and on-site RehabCare therapists to create the most effective physical therapy program for each individual. Currently running Monday through Friday, the RNP includes active and passive ranges of motion, ambulation, Walk to Dine, Walking Club, strengthening exercise, and splint and orthotic placement.

Specht says of the program, "It is so important, because it helps to prevent contractures and maintains movement of joints and extremities. It encourages residents to do more for themselves, giving a deep feeling of accomplishment when able to complete tasks they once were unable to do."

The RNP is one of the many ways that Juniper Village works to increase physical prosperity among those for whom we care, with positive outcomes visibly noticeable. Residents who have had strokes and never expected to walk again have--with assistance--stood and taken small steps. Some are able to lift a spoon to their mouth without assistance. "You can see the looks of pride and excitement on their faces," said Specht. She shares, "I have seen a resident who had a severe stroke who thought he'd never make it back to his home, walk down the hallway--with minimal assistance--and leave to go home."

October 2015 Events in State College, PA: Show Your Colors

Every October we turn our Alive in All Seasons focus to holidays and sports as we “Keep the Spirit” during this last celebratory quarter of the year. Sporting events are inevitably part of that celebration for many families.

According to Dr. Renee Clauselle, founder of Child and Family Psychology, “Bonding over sports — the highs and lows of the game — strengthens ties, helps us feel supported, and makes it easier for you to open up about personal things.” Think of sports as an opportunity to connect with others over a favorite – or even rival – team and learn more about each other. Even strangers can learn more about where they grew up, which teams they support, which sports they played and how those sports are different today. You may even learn something about your loved ones that you never knew. Perhaps great-grandma played softball in a women’s league during college. That would be something to pass along to future generations! Watching a sporting event can become so much more than plays and scores; it can become an opportunity to learn the history of someone you love.

Join us this month and “Show Your Colors” as we sponsor a local sports team, get into the spirit of the season with our Halloween Costume Party and honor those associates who go above and beyond with our annual Juniper Spirit Awards.

Our fabulous October 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care include our:

§  Dinner and Discussion on Driving Safely with representatives from HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital as they talk about using DriveABLE™ technology for determining a loved one’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle while a healthy dinner is provided on October 14th at 5:30 pm. (RSVP to 814-235-2041 and please let us know of any dietary restrictions you have when you call.)

§  Show Your Colors Pep Rally as residents support their favorite team with snacks, drinks and sports themed games held throughout the hour to see which team stands above the rest on October 16th at 2:00 pm.

§  Safe Trick-or-Treating for a spooky good time with children and families invited to join residents and staff for a fun evening of candy, costumes, movies and much, much more, as residents will be handing out candy and goodies to all children in costumes on October 30th at 6:00 pm. (Event open to public; no reservations required.)

We look forward to sharing our October 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care with you as we Show Your Colors.

September 13 – 19 is National Assisted Living Week

Understand the senior living options available
This year, National Assisted Living Week’s theme is Nourishing Life: Mind, Body and Spirit and celebrates the countless ways assisted living caregivers nurture the whole resident. This has been the basis of Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care’s mission since we began and is certainly a goal of the industry.
With the percentage of the U.S. population over age 65 steadily increasing, it is important to understand the many options available in specialized residences and the level of care they provide for the growing and varied needs of seniors.
In addition to the type of community, it is equally important to find one that offers compassionate care, unparalleled access to healthcare – preferably onsite, programming that will stimulate you such as Music & Memory, and a commitment to continued improvement.
Personal Care/Assisted Living residences are for seniors who require the least amount of care. Meals are provided along with assistance in medication management, bathing, and dressing, if needed. Housekeeping and laundry services may also be available. Community social activities or outings may be offered, and depending on their preferences and budgets, residents may have the option of choosing a private room or a shared apartment.
Although some Assisted Living residences may provide services for seniors with cognitive impairment, a Memory Care residence is a specialized community for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Providing 24-hour supervision and security, the Memory Care environment is designed to meet the unique challenges of Alzheimer’s patients.
Skilled Nursing Care residence, sometimes known as a nursing home, provides the highest level of care for its residents as well as round-the-clock availability of medical care. Seniors in these communities may be incontinent or require assistance with eating, walking, and moving about the bed.  Skilled Nursing Care residences usually provide long-term care for seniors who are too sick or frail for other types of residences.
In recognition of National Assisted Living Week, remember, when independent living becomes too difficult, moving into a senior living community that offers appropriate levels of care based on an individual’s need can often be the best solution.

Meet Our Wellness Leadership Team: Jennifer Gomez

At Juniper Village Rehabilitation and Skilled Care, our associates are like family, and it is this family's mission to improve the quality of life for our residents and their families by focusing on each individual resident as the whole person--body, mind, and spirit. We are passionate about and proud of the work that we do, and over the next several weeks, will be introducing you to members of our dedicated Wellness Leadership Team.

"I enjoy my co-workers and being part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team. Making a difference for the residents and their families is satisfying for me," Jennifer said. The feelings are obviously mutual, as smiles and warm greetings abound when she makes her way down the hall.

September 2015 Events in State College, PA: Spread Your Joy

As the air begins to cool and summer wanes, Juniper Village ends our “Stay Connected” series by recognizing Friendship and Joy. What is it that brings you joy? Is it the wet nose of a newborn pup? The smile of your first grandchild? The taste of a triple chocolate ice cream cone? Whatever it is we invite you to share that joy with others at Juniper Village this month.

Much attention has been paid to studies regarding the effects of stress on your health, but what about the effects of joy? The landmark “Nun Study,” as it's often known, revealed that positive emotion is correlated with longevity: 90% of the most cheerful quarter of nuns was alive at the age of eighty-five, whereas only 34% of the least cheerful quarter lived to that age. Similarly, 54% of the most cheerful fourth was alive at age ninety-four, versus 11% of the least cheerful. Of the 678 sisters in the original study about four dozen are still living. So go ahead, grab that triple chocolate cone it might just extend your life!

This month we invite you to “Spread Your Joy” as we honor our friendships in our Red Hat and Villager clubs and our Best Friends events; get our hands dirty at our Friendship Daffodil Project; and celebrate with our Birthday Party and House Warming Initiatives.

Our fabulous September 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care include our:

§  “Stick it to Temple” Tailgate Party as we show our spirit and watch the game on the big screen while Matt cooks up favorite picnic foods on a stick on September 5th at noon.
§  Friendship Lunch and Learn as Evelyn Wald, MS, M, DIV, talks about the importance of social groups and friendships in maintaining positive mental health at any age, so bring a friend or two, on September 9th at noon. (RSVP to 814-235-2041.)
§  Spaghetti Dinner and Bake Sale Fundraiser for Big Brothers/Big Sisters for a sit-down or take-out meal and delicious treats with a program that will teach you how you can make a difference in the life of a very special child through Centre County’s Children and Youth initiative that fosters positive friendships on September 23rd at 5:00 pm.

Juniper Village Rehabilitation and Skilled Care at Brookline: Your Partner for Successful Outcomes

We want to be your partner of choice in the new shared savings environment. At Juniper Communities, we have been collecting critical data for nearly 10 years. For example, we closely monitor residents to assure successful returns from either the hospital or rehabilitation setting.
Many re-hospitalizations are the result of falls. While unavoidable, response rate and injury rate contribute dramatically to unnecessary readmissions.
Another common cause of both initial hospitalizations and rehospitalizations is medication errors. Changes to medication regime whether after a scheduled physician appointment or emergency hospitalization can leave patients confused about what medications are most current. Our wellness team is responsible for medication reconciliation and management, a process which virtually eliminates medication errors.
Communication is key and Juniper Village, Rehabilitation and Skilled Care at Brookline takes communication to the next level through:
• Use of Electronic Health Records (Point Click Care)
• Optimized care transitions protocols
• Full implementation of INTERACT (Interventions to Reduce Acute Care Transfers)
• Use of a highly recognizable and consistent transfer information packet
• Focus on resident and care giver education and engagement
• Individualized care and service

New Beginnings - Welcome Samantha Ianaro

We at Juniper Village Rehabilitation and Skilled Care are proud to introduce our newest leadership team member, Director of Wellness, Samantha Ianaro (pictured at left). Samantha joins us with a lifetime of caregiving experience, having begun her journey as a child helping to care for an aging relative. "Having witnessed the aging process and illness progression as a child, I developed a unique understanding of the needs and expectations of long-term care residents," she shared. At 16-years-old, Samantha began volunteering as a candy striper in a long-term care community, and the rest is--as they say--history. Working her way through the ranks, she earned her certification as a nursing assistant, became a Licensed Practical Nurse, and four years ago, earned her RN from Excelsior College.

Ianaro values a person-centered, holistic approach to resident care, which is what, she says, first drew her to the Juniper family. Samantha shares that she already recognizes and appreciates the way that all departments work together to achieve the same end result. It's an honor to be a part of the Juniper journey, she said. "It is my goal to continue the good work that is being done here. No one wants to leave home, which is why we should always strive to make our community as much of a home-like environment as possible. We are here for whatever our residents need."

With the welcoming of our new Director of Wellness, comes a bittersweet farewell to former DOW, Janice Whitaker. After six years with our team, Janice has accepted an exciting new opportunity as Program Administrator for the Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State. We wish both of these incredible women much success, both professionally and personally, and look forward to collaborating with Janice in her new role.

25th Annual MNMC Golf Classic

Juniper associates were out in full force last Saturday for the 25th Annual Mount Nittany Medical Center Golf Classic. The event--one of the hospital's largest fundraisers--brought in nearly $162,000 for its cardiac catheterization lab, which was recently accredited through ACE - Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence.

Each year, Juniper Village at Brookline serves as the "Closet to the Pin" contest sponsor, where golfers compete for cash prizes based on driving distance and accuracy. This year's consolation (4th place) prize was awarded to one of our Senior Living family members. Congratulations to all on a job well done!

Dr. Gong Chen Presentation at Brookline

It was a packed house for Penn State biology professor, Dr. Gong Chen. Chen, a world-renowned brain researcher, recently presented "Reversing Glial Scar Back to Neural Tissue for Brain Repair," about his work to repair brain tissue in those with traumatic brain injury, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and other brain-related illnesses.

Dr. Chen and his research group are studying ways to chemically reprogram damaged tissue. While implementation of such a treatment is five to ten years away, the research to this point has been been very promising for an array applications including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and ALS.

August 2015 Events in State College, PA: Breathe in Life

As we continue our summer focus on Staying Connected, we devote our August 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village in Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care to connecting to the Environment. One of our Signature Programs is the Green Canopy Program. This program is designed to support healthier living for our residents and staff through environmentally conscious communities and events. This program directly supports this month’s focus on the environment and our vision to make the world a better place, a place where each of us can live fully throughout all seasons of life.

Margaret Mead reminds us that “We won't have a society if we destroy the environment.” To that end, Juniper Village has created Green Teams in each of our communities to support our environmental initiatives by assisting with our recycling and energy efficiency programs – such as using CFL light bulbs and Energy Star rated appliances, while making suggestions for additional programs to increase quality of life and promote sustainability in our communities. Have you met your Juniper Village Green Team? This month during our August 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care our Green Teams will share their mission with the greater community by heading up initiatives to help others learn how to live a more sustainable life through our Wide-Scale Recycling Programs, our Environmental Stability Program and the Implantation of our Green Teams. It Takes a Village: Individualized Rehab

At Juniper Village Rehabilitation and Skilled Care at Brookline, our Connections, therapies, and restorative nursing departments are working together on an exciting new endeavor. With the goal of providing rehabilitative care to those residents whose insurances no longer cover rehab services--but who still could benefit from individualized treatment programs--a new spin on our walking club has recently been introduced.

Corey Sheehan, who heads the therapy department for our in-house RehabCare services, compiled a list of applicable residents' therapy discharge summaries, which is used in collaboration with Connections and restorative nursing to set the most accurate and productive recovery goals and provide an improved baseline from which to work.

In the near future, group exercise programs will be facilitated and tailored to individual resident needs, providing programs to improve ambulation, balance, range of motion and more!

July 2015 Events in State College, PA: Stand in Integrity

With our July 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care this month we kick off our summer quarter Alive In All Seasons theme “Stay Connected” where we will strive to stay connected to the community and the environment. Throughout July we will focus on staying connected to our community through Volunteerism, where we Stand In Integrity. The biggest and most visible benefit of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers work magic in unifying communities. Through volunteer work you are able to connect with your community on a deeper level and help to make it a better place to live and grow. But what we don’t always realize is that volunteering is a two-way street. Volunteers benefit as much as the causes they support. Through volunteering you make new friends, expand your professional, social and support networks and boost your social skills. So, give it a try and experience the benefits of giving of yourself.

If you are looking for opportunities to share your time, check with our Connections Directors to see what opportunities we have, or join us in one of our volunteer projects. Also plan to join us during our July 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care as we recognize our Ambassador Program, focus on our Resident Computer Center and training or any other calendar item that catches your eye.

Our fabulous July 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care include our:

  • Green Thumbs Wanted Growing a Community Garden to help us develop a bountiful harvest and perhaps learn how to spruce up your own yard on July 23rd at 2:30 pm.
  • Dinner and Discussion with Dr. Gong Chen for an informative presentation by this Penn State University leading researcher into Alzheimer’s Disease accompanied by a tasty meal on July 29th at 6:00 pm.
  • American Red Cross Community Blood Drive because each blood donation can save up to 3 lives, so together we can give the gift of life this summer on July 31st from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

We look forward to sharing our July 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Care with you as we Stand in Integrity.

Fun for everyone: FAMILY PICNIC!

It's a tradition that residents, friends, and family members look forward to all year long: Juniper Village at Brookline's annual family picnic, the largest and most popular event held throughout the campus. On Sunday, nearly 700 guests enjoyed a fun-filled day that included some of summer's best sights, sounds and tastes of summer.

Though raindrops were falling, outlooks were bright as picnic-goers noshed on hot dogs and hamburgers, fresh grilled chicken, potato salad and baked beans, and pies with Penn State's Berkey Creamery ice cream. Back for another year, was crowd favorite, Deacons of Dixieland, and the Happy Valley Alley Clown troupe, with their in-demand balloon animal menagerie.

All attendees were thoroughly pleased with the get together, with one thank you note perhaps stating it best, saying, "Awesome picnic done by awesome people!"

Brookline Welcomes Connections Director, Larry Glace!

Larry Glace

Juniper Village Rehabilitation and Skilled Care at Brookline is pleased to introduce Larry Glace as our new Connections Director. A Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation graduate of Lock Haven University, Glace is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who credits a close relationship with his grandparents for his passion of working with the geriatric population. A native of Tyrone, PA, Larry spent much of his youth spending time enjoying outdoor activities like hunting and fishing with his grandfather, and was especially close with his grandmother, as well.

With a little less than a month with Juniper, Larry says that besides working with residents, it is the great team work and collaborative efforts between departments and communities within Brookline that he enjoys the most. Please join us in welcoming Larry to our Juniper family!

A Murderously Good Time!

Juniper Village at Brookline and the State College Community Theater recently teamed up for a great cause and hilariously-fun evening with their very own murder mystery dinner fundraiser. "The Wedding from Hell" performance filled the house and raised more than $800 for the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk, held this September in State College. Team JVB kicked off its charity efforts with its own twist on the Theater's popular murder mystery series.

The "ceremony" consisted of a drunken judge, broken bridal shoes, funeral flowers, tons of exes, and of course, a murder. Members of the SCCT worked with audience members to sort through clues and solve the mystery. A wonderful time was had by those in attendance, all while helping a tremendously worthwhile cause. If you would like more information on how you can join and/or support Juniper Village at Brookline's Heart Walk team, please e-mail Anissa Rupert Ilie for more details.

June 2015 Events in State College, PA: Live in Wellness

We close this quarter’s theme of Healthy Aging: “Let Wellbeing Thrive” with a focus on Food, as we Live in Wellness through our June 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehabilitation and Skilled Care. Hippocrates advises, “Let food be thy medicine”. Research shows that eating a well-planned, balanced mix of foods every day has many health benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. But, food has other benefits. There are also emotional needs that are satisfied by food. Most of us have fond memories of food from days gone by. Whether it was our mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies, a hotdog from a street vendor or our wedding cake, food has a way of transporting us back to the past. It is in that spirit that Juniper’s dining program is called the H’art and Soul of Dining. The philosophy is that we impart spirited service, companionship and nourishment through the sharing of good food. In addition to meeting our resident’s unique nutritional needs, we also meet their emotional and social needs as well.

Join us for our June 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehabilitation and Skilled Care to share in our hydration program, complete with healthy snacks and learn more about healthy food and wellness with our dietitian presentations as we continue to Live in Wellness.

2015 Juniper Leadership Conference Awards

Juniper celebrated its 27th anniversary this year.  Each year communities are honored for their achievements in critical operational and financial areas.

Awards were presented at the 2015 Juniper Leadership Conference, held this year in Baltimore’s historic inner harbor.  Awards were presented by Lynne Katzmann, founder and CEO of Juniper Communities, and Diane Byrne, Vice President of Program, Development, Training & Operational Oversight.

At the recent Juniper leadership conference, Juniper Village at Brookline Skilled Rehabilitation and Care was presented the Juniper Culture Award in recognition of “walking the talk” and leading the implementation of Juniper’s Culture and Signature Programs in the midst of a full acquisition transition in 2014.

She's Got Spirit... How 'Bout You?

Juniper Village at Brookline Spirit Award
Clockwise, from top: Laughard and her nominators; with supervisor, Matt Nevling; Cathy's cake; with Administrator, Kathy Russell

Juniper Village Rehabilitation & Skilled Care is proud to introduce our latest Juniper Spirit Award winner, Cathy Laughard. Instead of trying to explain the many ways in which Cathy deserves this honor, below is an excerpt from a letter written by her supervisor, Matt Nevling. We think you'll see what makes Cathy so special to us all.

"I feel that no one embodies the qualities and hard work that the Juniper Spirit Award recognizes as well as Cathy. The goal of the reward is to identify those workers who not only do their basic jobs well, but go beyond them to make our campus a better place. I have never met anyone who fits those criteria more than Cathy Laughard.

Cathy has been one of our head cooks since before my time here. During her long career, she has endured many changes, embracing them all with a great attitude. She reports to work daily with a positive attitude and upbeat personality that spreads among the staff in the kitchen. She is a warm, welcome presence for new employees trying to find their place, as well as a dependable supervisor for those who are experienced in their positions.

Of all the positive qualities that Cathy possesses, the one that is most deserving of this award is her dedication to the residents. This dedication goes above and beyond what most are willing to do. Cathy frequently finds time in her day to visit with residents to discuss the upcoming meals. She works hard to customize dishes and go off-menu to provide our residents with foods that they want, no matter how particular the request. Her warm personality also puts new residents at ease and allows them to feel a level of control when their current situation may not normally allow such feelings.

Overall I cannot say enough about Cathy. I am thankful for her hard work and leadership and making even my own days here better."

From all of us at Brookline, congratulations, Cathy!

A Meal That Matters

2015 State College Area Meals on Wheels benefit dinner

Making a difference in the community is an important part of what we at Juniper Village do each and every day. Not only do we believe in nurturing the spirit of life in our own residents, but also in the residents of the greater State College community. This is why a number of Juniper Village at Brookline associates were proud to represent our organization at the 10th annual State College Area Meals on Wheels (SCMOW) benefit dinner. As the longest-running corporate supporter of SCMOW, and the only platinum-level sponsor, JVB associates were treated to front row seating at the event and the opportunity to meet keynote speaker and Penn State football head coach, James Franklin.

Since 1971, SCMOW has served more than a million meals, and is now able to serve meals three times per week to those in the State College Area School District. According to SCMOW Board President, Bill Haner, the total amount raised at this year's dinner is slated to be between $45,000 and $50,000, which will tie or exceed the organization's record fundraising amount!

May 2015 Events in State College, PA: Grow Strong Daily

Fitness is on our mind during our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Nursing with our Alive In All Seasons theme “Grow Strong Daily”. As you know, physical activity is good for you both physically and mentally. Regular physical activity can help you to continue to do the things you love and stay independent as you age. Exercise can reduce the risk of developing some diseases and reduce symptoms of some chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and balance issues.

But, if exercise has not been a part of your daily routine how do you take that first step? Start by making it fun! Turn a walk around the block into a scavenger hunt – search for daffodils, birds, squirrels or lucky pennies. Instead of a dip in the pool, create an adventure as you pretend to swim with the dolphins. Rather than send your co-worker an email, walk to her office and communicate face to face, double the benefit with a smile! What’s important is to make it fun and just start – today!

Join us for our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Nursing as we will Grow Strong Daily with Fitness Five, and walk “cross country” with our Route 66 Walking Program and learn more about keeping our hearts fit at our Healthy Heart Luncheon. We look forward to sharing these and many other activities with you this month. Peruse this month’s calendar, and we will see you soon!

Our fabulous May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Nursing include our:

§  Author Cindy Keith: Caregiver Manual for People with Dementia and Book Signing where you can learn more about how to care for loved ones suffering from memory impairment on May 7th at 2:00 pm.
§  Penn State University Master Gardeners Present: Feed Your Plants and Watch Them Grow as they give us professional tips on how to get the most from our green thumbs on May 18th at 2:30 pm.
§  Get Fit Don’t Slip Class to see how staying healthy and engaging in physical activity can help minimize the risk of falls on May 21st at 2:30 pm.
§  Murder Mystery Fundraiser as we engage with intriguing and amusing entertainment while enjoying a delicious meal to benefit our favorite charitable causes on May 30th at 5:30 pm.

We hope to see you at one or more of our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Rehab and Skilled Nursing!

Come On Down for An Evening of FUN and Prizes!!

Okay… so we didn’t technically win any prizes this time around, but we sure did have a ton of fun when “The Price Is Right LIVE” made a stop at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center! More than 20 JVB residents and associates were part of the audience to watch as contestants played PLINKO, spun the Big Wheel, and had a Showcase Showdown. And as you can see, everyone was sporting their “Nurturing the Spirit of Fun” T-shirts (and some necklaces, and headbands, and pom-poms)! There was dancing in the aisles, applause, and lots and lots of laughter!
